Why are Freelance Writing Scams so common?

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Freelance scams are available a dime a dozen, and with the greater penetration and accessibility of the Internet, the number of scams are just increasing. Whether you are a freelancer coder, a freelancer graphics artist, or a freelancer writer, you will always find some scam or the other going around in your freelancing network. It has been seen that the most freelance scams are prevalent amongst the freelance writing community. This situation begs the question, why are freelance writing scams so common?  Here are some answers.

There are too many freelance writers:

Basically speaking, freelance writing is not as complex and difficult as it is normally made out to be. More than a lot of people can actually write as well as the Internet would need.  Also, with the prominence of search engine optimization, article writing has become quite a lucrative profession, making many people jump into the fray, and therein lies the problem. With so many people in the fray, the freelance writing world is hustling and bustling with activity and there are too many people looking for work than it's possible to count.

This gives rise to a situation which basically translates into easy picking for scamsters. There are several freelance writers who have jumped into the fray, without actually knowing how freelance writing works, what are the ways to ensure that they will not be scammed, etc.

Setting up the Scam is Simple:

If I were to write a 500 word article on how to set up a freelance writing scam, I'd be done in 200 words. All you have to write in the brief is how many articles you want, what is the word count, that you do not want it copied and some other aspects that you might conjure up. While if the same brief was to be set up for a programmer or a graphic designer, the scammer would need to go to such lengths that they would just learn programming and start working as a freelance programmer anyway.

Lower Interaction Time Frames:

Take it from a person whose favorite movie is Ocean's 11. the best scams are those that are carried out in a quick, efficient and lightning precise manner. Of course, there are those long, convulted scams that we read about in the books, but if the freelance scammer had that kind of brains, they would be somewhere far off, not ripping people off  $100 or $200 work orders.

Freelance writing does not take much time:

I know of some content writers who write about 10 articles a day, and that's a full time job for them. So, even if a scammer tells them that he needs a 50 articles written, it would be at the most a week of interaction - nothing that a scammer cannot do. '

These are just some of the reasons that freelance writing scams are so prevalent as compared to the other freelance profiles. Of course, it does not help that there are so many people who are just looking for a break in the freelance writing world!
