Why do scammers look for Freelancers?

Monday, February 8, 2010

Scams are something new that has just sprung up from somewhere just because freelancing or globalization has got into the picture. Scams were always there, and as long as gullible people are there, they will still continue to be so. However, it cannot be denied that scammers are more or less having a field day with freelancers all over the world. We look into some of the reasons why.

Freelancing is supposed to be a 'shady' profession:

Even after freelancers are standing toe to toe with professionals, and some even making more money than the day job professionals, there are still some isolated countries, cities and states where people still do not understand how a person makes money just sitting on their computer or doing some paperwork here and there. Also, there is a little bit of jealousy in the people who know that you freelance, and that finally just culminates into a thought that you have some easy money, and it wouldn't hurt if someone stops takes a few thousand dollars. Hell, they wouldn't even know if freelancing was legal! Therefore, the criminals try extra hard to con the freelancers, and they succeed.

Freelancing Works on Trust:

All said and done, freelancing is like a conscientious warrior who wouldn't do something because it isn't right to do so. Otherwise, what stops a person from stopping all the work after receiving a huge chunk as advance when the client is sitting half the world away - the conscience. However, this works wrongly for people who have to conscience, and are ok with breaking a few trusts while they are making thousands out of their new scam

Most Wouldn't Want to Talk About It

Show me one person who is doing freelancing without a fear in the world and I will show you ten who hunker from their day jobs and then work freelance to make some extra money on the side without the permission of their employers and in blatant disregard of the rules and regulations of the organization. In such a scenario, if a freelancer who is working without the permission of their employer is duped of $1000, would he or she make a huge hue and cry about it? Thought so.
